Roland W. “Rolly” Hicks
1944 ∼ 2021
Roland W. Hicks (Rolly) passed away at his home in Centerville on February 17, 2021. He was the son of Roland L. Hicks and Nadezda (Elkevitch) Hicks. Born on January 1, 1944 in Brockton, MA, he graduated from Brockton High School in 1961 where he was a stand-out athlete in baseball, football, and basketball, eventually entering the Brockton High School Hall of Fame. His passion was baseball, and he played catcher for the perennial state champion Brockton Post 35 American Legion club and later, while playing for Cape Cod Community College, he signed up with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He was offered a professional contract while with the Kettleers, but turned it down to pursue a career in teaching and coaching. He began a career at Barnstable High School in 1967 where, over the years, he served as a teacher, a football and baseball coach, and a Dean. He was inducted into the Barnstable High School Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to the community and coaching success. Before retiring, he had made many deep connections with his students and athletes, many of whom still treasure his help and guidance at critical moments in their lives. He is survived by his son Roland (Lee) and his wife Kim of South Dennis, MA, son Brian and his wife Kellie, of Osterville, MA, son Jason and his wife Jeanne of Natick, MA and 6 grandchildren: Amy, Jenny, Sam, Grace, Sydney, and Caitlin. He is predeceased by his sister Alexandra A. Floren, and leaves behind his two nephews Jonathan and Whitney Floren and their families. A memorial mass has been scheduled for 11AM on Friday, February 26, 2021 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 230 S. Main St., Centerville, MA .
