Michael R. Stella Sr. “Big Mike”

Michael R. Stella, Sr., AKA “Big Mike” Born 9/29/1929, Dorchester, Mass.

Mike grew up in the “North End” of Boston just a few houses from the historic Paul Revere house. He had many interesting childhood stories about the “North End”.

Right out of high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps., where he earned the rank of Sergeant during the Korean War. His war time friend had a pen-pal back in the States.  He told Mike she had a friend and he should start writing to her.  He did, and the rest was history.  When he was discharged, he married his pen-pal Joan, and started their family.

When he first came home from the war, he opened M@B Auto Repair Service with his friend Bob and they rebuilt car engines.  A few years later, he became a Boston Police Officer in the “North End” of Boston and stayed a dedicated officer until he retired.

Mike and Joan first lived in Dorchester.  Later, they moved to Melrose, where they stayed for 30+ years and raised their children.  Mike had to literally re-do the entire house himself.  He did the plumbing, electrical, drywall, hardwood floors, insulation, ceilings, stone work, brick work, replaced every window and built a shed and garage on the property, a new roof and whatever else needed to be done.  He was a very handy guy to have around.

Mike loved the outdoors, but the ocean was his favorite place.  He and his wife, Joan, would always go to the beach after the daily crowd left.  They would walk the beach and then just sit and watch the waves and boats for hours until the beautiful sunset was gone.  This love of water brought them to Cape Cod after his retirement.

When they moved to the Cape house, he decided to build an addition.  He started digging with a shovel and a 5-gallon bucket moving the dirt to a different area of the yard.   That was a lot of buckets, time and sweat.  He dug an entire basement area for the addition before he started building.  This turned out to be Joan’s favorite room of the house.

Mike was predeceased by his wife, Joan Mary (Claflin) Stella, a daughter, Lynn Marie Stella, his parents, Josephine Faletra Stella and Guiseppe (Joseph) Stella.  He is survived by their children; Joanne Stella Kluk (Bob), York, PA, Michael Stella, Jr. (Linda), Marlborough, MA, Christine Stella LaVigne (Marshall), Melrose, MA. His grandchildren; Jason Kluk (Danielle), Kunkletown, PA, Katelyn Kluk, Painesville, OH, Melissa (Michael) DeCroteau, Reading, MA, James LaVigne, Melrose, MA and his great grandchildren Owen and Lincoln DeCroteau.
