Evelyn Louise (West) Hansen, 89, of Falmouth, died on July 21, at home and with family by her side, after a long illness. She was the beloved wife of Rev. Robert A. Hansen, to whom she was married for 64 years.
Evelyn was born in Boston, the daughter of Joseph and Olga West, and the seventh of eight children. She graduated from Jamaica Plain high school in 1948 and from Burdett College of Business and Shorthand in 1951, and worked for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. In 1956, she graduated from Gordon College with a degree in elementary education, magna cum laude, and a member of the Phi Alpha Chi honor society. She also met her husband at Gordon, where he was a seminary student. After a year in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, they moved to Falmouth in 1958, and have lived in Falmouth ever since. Her husband served as the minister of the Falmouth Baptist Church for 40 years. Evelyn supported his church ministry in many ways, including as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Evelyn also worked for 25 years as a teacher in the Falmouth school system, with most of those years spent as a kindergarten teacher at the East Falmouth elementary school. In addition to her love of teaching children, Evelyn enjoyed being a schoolteacher because it allowed her to be home with her own children when they were home, including summers.
Besides her husband, Evelyn leaves four children, Dr. Eric Hansen of Starkville, MS, James Hansen and his wife Sarah of Nashua, NH, Dr. Janice Goodman and her husband Rev. Ross Goodman of Winchester, MA, and Joy Russell of Coventry, RI. She also leaves ten grandchildren and a great grand-daughter, who is named after her.
Among many interests, Evelyn enjoyed travel, cooking Swedish recipes passed down from her mother, and writing family histories. She is remembered by her husband as a wonderful and supportive partner, and by her children and grandchildren as a loving mother and grandmother, and the keeper of family traditions. Through years of declining health, she continued to live at home with the help of her husband and many caring home health aides. Evelyn had a deep Christian faith, instilled in childhood, and exemplified in her life, and her family is comforted to know that she is now at home with the Lord.
She will be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Falmouth, with the burial followed by a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, located at 2095 Main St., Brewster, MA, 02631.
