Donald Wood

Donald Wood, 89, of Falmouth, MA passed at his home on May 19, 2020.

Donald was born in May 1931 in Barnstable, MA, the son of Clifford and Idamae Wood (Yeager).  Donald was a lifelong resident of Falmouth.  He graduated from Lawrence High School, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged.

Donald was most well known as the owner/operator of Lawrence’s Restaurant, which he took over from his father, Clifford Wood. Originally founded by Lyman Lawrence as “Lawrence’s Sandwich Depot,” the restaurant was sold to Lyman’s partner, Clifford, and had served over four generations of customers.  Donald was fond of hosting an annual slideshow of postcards and other memorabilia from Lawrence’s fans, who shared stories and antiques from as early as the 19th century. During the other months,  Donald was self employed as a general contractor performing carpentry and other home improvements during the off season.

Outside of work, Donald could most often be found tending his substantial garden or greeting passersby from his kitchen window. During  many summer months, the family would enjoy clamming on Bourne's Pond.

Donald served as a Falmouth town meeting member and was a member of the Elks Lodge.  Donald was preceded by his wife Shirley Wood (Childs), to whom he was married over  50 years.  Donald is survived by his daughters, Nadia Conrad of Niceville FL, Frances Smith of Falmouth, MA and Rebecca Steinmetz of Montreal, Canada.

In remembrance, we ask that in lieu of donations, you please take time to give to your community, plant a garden, or help a neighbor. These tokens of kindness were hallmarks of Donald’s life, and he would be proud to see these traditions continue to thrive among the Cape Cod community.
