June-Alyce Harrington Marquis of Alexandria, Virginia and Chatham, Massachusetts died peacefully at home, in the loving care of her husband and daughters, in Chatham on August 1st after a long battle with bladder cancer. She was the wife of Dennis Charles Marquis for 56 years.
June-Alyce Harrington was born in Waltham, Massachusetts, the daughter of Blanche Cousins and Webster Fiske Harrington. She lived most of her life in Virginia. In recent years June and Dennis divided their time between Alexandria and Chatham. She took great pleasure in claiming over twenty relatives in the Chatham area.
June’s first priority was her family. She and Dennis have established traditions enjoyed and cherished by their family including an annual three-day Christmas celebration in Alexandria and Family Week in Cape Cod eagerly anticipated by all.
With four kids at home, June completed a B.S. in Mathematics from George Mason University and an M.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia. June touched the lives of many as a Mathematics Teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia, teaching in Robinson and Mt. Vernon High Schools, as well as serving as Department Chairperson and a Mathematics Specialist for the county. Later she was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech. While living in The Hague, Netherlands for five years in the 90’s when her husband worked for NATO, June continued her teaching as a Mathematics Educational Consultant for The International and the U.S. Department of Defense Schools in various European countries.
June’s legacy continues through her four daughters and their families: Susan Marquis and husband Christopher Thompson of Santa Monica, California; Carol and husband Craig Auerbach of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jill and husband Sean Milliken of Alexandria, Virginia; and Lisa Marquis and partner Merryll McElwain of Sherman Oaks, California; grandchildren Kevin Thompson, Catherine and Emily June Auerbach, and Alexandra June and John (Jack) Milliken; and her sister Shirley Cullen of Chicago, Illinois.
June was an active and long-time member of Christ Church, Alexandria and First United Methodist Church, Chatham. A celebration of June Harrington Marquis’s life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham on August 11th at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in June’s memory to the First United Methodist Church, Main and Cross Streets, Chatham, MA 02633.
